The dollar or “the buck”

As you can see from the example above our happiness is connected with money very relatively. A sum of money can bring joy only if it considerably exceeds the one we already have. And it is not always true. Recently the American TV company ABC conducted a mass survey: what yearly income makes a person rich? Despite the fact an average yearly income of a US family of 4 people was about $40k, 54% of the participants said that $200k a year or even less than that was enough for happiness. And only a quarter of the respondents - 24% named a round number – 1 million dollars.
The demands of our former compatriots were even more modest. According to BILIOM Russian people consider an income from $220 to $350 per person a month “very deserving”. Sociologists speak about a so called law: we need a bit more than we earn for happiness. For instance, those who earn $200, will think that $500 will be enough, and the people who earn $1000 dream of $2,5-3 thousands. However as soon as their dreams come true, most of them raise the scale of values drastically and start dreaming about a bigger income. This tendency is endless: after all, the extent of satisfaction of our income depends, first of all, on its comparability with the standard of well-being of those around us. Real sums of money we dream about so zealously do not really matter.

Money
There are a lot of evidences to it. During the last decades an income of an average American has risen two times in comparison to the 50s of XX century, at the same time contemporary families have twice as few kids. Nevertheless the results of polls display: people are satisfied with their lives less than they were half a century ago. At that time 35% of the participants called themselves very happy, and in the middle of the 90s only 29% did. The same tendency can be traced everywhere – from Europe to Australia. Moreover, there was a research conducted in the US where they compared the attitude of 42 rich people (whose yearly income was more than $10 millions) and average people who were selected accidentally. It turned out that multi-millionaires are not more satisfied with themselves and their lives. Money certainly makes everyday life easier, but at the same time personal problems appear that cannot be solved with the help of money: rich people had more complaints about such problems than the people with an average income… The conclusion is very simple. It is difficult to be happy if you are penniless. But you will be disappointed if you hope to become happy with the help of money. A person needs money like air. But he needs only a certain, not so great amount of air for a full life. If we have much more air than we need, life does not get either easier or more pleasant because of it.
